Reflexology

Reflexology is a science which deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Stimulating these reflexes properly can help many health problems in a natural way, a type of preventative maintenance. Reflexology is a serious advance in the health field and should not be confused with massage.

The idea behind Reflexology is not new - in fact, it was practiced as early as 2330 B.C. by the Egyptian culture. Reflexology as we know it today was first researched and developed by Eunice Ingham, the pioneer of this field. Her first book on the subject was published in 1938. And since 1942, Reflexology workshops have been conducted year round.

Reflexology promotes relaxation and well being. This ancient therapy is known to promote the body's own healing powers. It is suitable for any age groups, from babies to seniors. Reflexology is more than a foot massage, it's a natural healing therapy which is highly effective in dealing with many complaints.

It is based on the principle that the foot, divided in reflex zones, is a mirror image of the body. Each reflex zone corresponds to a part of the body. Specific manipulation and pressure of these zones reduces and eliminates blockages in corresponding glands, organs and other parts of the body.

Reflexology is used primarily for relaxing tension. Doctors agree that over 75% of our health problems can be linked to nervous stress and tension.

What happens when I have a treatment?
After first warming and loosening the feet with gentle massage and manipulation, the reflex points of first one foot and then the other are gently stimulated using a variety of finger pressures and techniques.
This stimulation is thought to activate either a) nerves in the feet which connect via the spine to the corresponding organ or body part, or b) activate energy pathways or meridians
running from the foot to the specific body part.
Either way, the stimulated reflex causes the body to energise the area, healing, balancing and cleansing.

This means that a sore shoulder can be relieved though the feet, lungs can be stimulated to cleanse, or a sluggish liver activated to work more efficiently.
In general, the body and mind can be brought back towards health by the systematic stimulation of the reflex points, in a similar way to the methods employed in acupuncture.
